Q: I'm new to homeschooling. How big of a role will this group be playing in my child's education?
A: We wont be teaching your kids to read or do chemistry but we will be happy to help guide you along the way! This group is primarily for community. Yes, we do lots of learning together but most of it is about getting along with others, co-operation, nurturing long term bonds, mentoring and leadership. Having a community enables us to pitch in for "school" type experiences like parties, field trips and special classes but each family chooses their own educational materials and does the work of typical school subjects separately from group gatherings. Some of our families incorporate lots of structured learning time and bookwork at home each week and some of our families allow their children to pursue their interests and learn at their own pace - all styles are welcome!
Q: Is this a Christian or secular homeschool group?
A: Neither or both. ?? We have members that are Christian and others that believe other things and some that don't believe. We are united by our love & awe for nature/creation and our belief in the value of play and exploration. We do not usually teach or practice any spirituality together in an organized or planned way nor do we teach that there is nothing beyond what meets the eye.
Q: Can dads come to Madschooling events?
A: Unless an event is described as being for moms then dads are welcome! We usually have many dads at our potlucks and camping trips but if it's not your husband's cup of tea that is fine too.
Q: I live in western Ohio (or some other place far away from Madison County) is it realistic to think I can I make the drive?
A: We have families that drive over an hour to our weekly Tuesday meetups. It really depends on your preferences and limitations. We are usually meeting within 30 minutes of Anderson Indiana.
Q: Can I join if I only have teenagers?
A: We do not have any teens presently, as of fall 2025 our oldest kid is 12. If everyone who had emailed asking if we had teens had given the group a try then we would have many teens. If you have a teenager who is interested in teaching or mentoring they would enjoy the group anyway and it's going to take having one to get more joining.
Q: Can I join if I only have a toddler/baby?
A: Yes, we do have babies in the group - however we have observed that mothers with only one small child find the hikes and all-weather nature of the group to be challenging. If you desire adventure with your wee one though this would be the best place to learn the ropes. Also, our group is as much for moms as it is for kids so even if it isn't the baby's favorite day of the week it may become yours and that is okay. New moms need support.
Q: Can I bring my grandkids?
A: Absolutely! All that we ask is that we consistently see the same adults bringing kids to most of our gatherings. This is a community for the grownups too.
